English

English is the area of the curriculum where students study the use of English in the areas of:

  • Language: the development of understanding of how language works
  • Literature: Understanding, appreciating, responding to, analysing and creating literature: an enjoyment in, and informed appreciation of, how English language can convey information and emotion, create imaginative worlds and aesthetic and other significant experiences.
  • Literacy: the development of appropriateness, accuracy, confidence, fluency in English across growing and increasingly complex and unfamiliar settings.

To address these strands Seaton has a strong commitment to reading, supported by our Silent Sustained Reading Program and strong participation in The Premier's Reading Challenge.

We value and practise explicit teaching in writing, comprehension, and critical literacy. This is specifically achieved through our application of the "Accelerated Literacy" methodology.

As part of Seaton's commitment to "A Culture of Achievement" in the Middle School there are 4 Common Assessment Tasks: 2 text responses and 2 comprehensions.

At Stage 1 students choose between Essential English, English and Advanced English. At Stage 2 students choose between Essential English, English and English Literary Studies.

VET
